FAQs

Internal Controls Reviews, Explained

What does an evaluation of internal controls look at?

It is a detailed review of your existing internal control environment, covering policies, procedures and controls across all key operational areas. The purpose is to identify control weaknesses, gaps and areas prone to errors, fraud or non-compliance. Once that risk assessment is complete, the work moves on to testing whether the controls you already have are operating as intended.

How is the effectiveness of a control actually tested?

Through sample checks, walkthroughs and data analysis, which together show whether a control operates in practice rather than only on paper. The control environment, the testing procedures used and the findings are then documented in detail, producing reports that both management and auditors can work from. Where deficiencies appear, practical recommendations follow on how to remediate them.

Which fraud risks does a controls review address?

The review examines controls related to fraud risk management, in particular segregation of duties and authorization processes. Both matter because they determine who can initiate a transaction and who can approve it. The objective covers prevention and detection together, so the assessment considers whether existing mechanisms would stop a fraudulent act and whether they would surface one that had already occurred.

What standards are our controls measured against?

Controls are evaluated against relevant regulatory requirements, accounting standards including IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) and GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles), and industry best practices. Measuring against external benchmarks rather than internal habit is what makes the conclusion useful, since the aim is a control environment that genuinely supports compliance and transparency.

What do we receive at the end of the review?

You receive documentation of your control environment, the testing procedures applied and the findings, written up as detailed reports for management and auditors. Alongside that come practical recommendations to remediate deficiencies, enhance control design and improve how controls are executed. The intent is a control environment that can be sustained, not a one-off snapshot.
